Science

Exploration, observation and investigation of God’s world form the basis of our Science work with children. It equips them with the necessary skills to explore and understand the world that they live in.

Our aims:

  • to foster an enjoyment and confidence in science
  • to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • to develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • to equip children with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

Our key strategies:

  • Lessons will be based on, and follow the guidelines in, the National Curriculum for Science.
  • Children will be taught the skills needed to test their ideas and predictions through a variety of practical activities.
  • They will be encouraged to communicate their own ideas and present their findings in different ways.
  • Scientific vocabulary will be introduced when appropriate, in order to enable the children to communicate their understanding with greater precision.
  • As well as the skills needed in Science, children will learn the knowledge needed for each topic.
  • Science teaching will be linked into the home and the environment in which children live to make it applicable.

Assessment:

Teachers will assess children after teaching each topic. Some of this will be knowledge based assessment and some will be practical, investigation skills assessment.
